Collective action improves food value chains in West Africa, according to Konan Samuel Ahoudjo

Konan Samuel Ahoudjo, a researcher at the International Center for Agricultural Research for Development, has demonstrated that collective action in the rice sector in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana can significantly improve productivity and incomes for small producers. This thesis, defended in 2025, highlights effective strategies to strengthen coordination among farmers.

Agricultural systems in sub-Saharan Africa face challenges such as food insecurity and low productivity, exacerbated by fragmented value chains. In this context, collective action emerges as a solution to improve coordination among small producers, who are the majority in the region. The study identifies three types of collective actions: horizontal, vertical, and transversal. Informal mutual aid groups in Côte d'Ivoire prove to be more effective than formal organizations, allowing for reduced labor costs and access to credit. These results underscore the importance of cooperation among producers to strengthen food value chains.
