A thesis on adoption in Togo reveals crucial issues for adoptive families

The thesis by Samiratou Tetou Amadou, defended at the University of Angers, highlights that 50% of adopted children in Togo learn their status during adolescence, which can lead to emotional disturbances. This research, validated by the ABES/STAR network, emphasizes the importance of developing support programs for adoptive families in the country.

The research by Samiratou Tetou Amadou, titled "Representations of adoptive filiation and the context of the emergence of conduct disorders in adopted children in Togo," addresses often overlooked family dynamics. In West Africa, adoption is surrounded by taboos, and traditional family structures complicate the understanding of parent-child relationships, making this study particularly relevant.

The qualitative study conducted with fourteen adoptive families reveals that 50% of adopted children are informed of their adoption during adolescence, a period prone to identity crises. Furthermore, 46.66% of adoptive parents express concerns regarding attachment, highlighting the emotional challenges these families face in a context where emotional security may be lacking.

The results of this research pave the way for strategic recommendations for the development of tailored support programs for adoptive families in Togo. By investing in education and awareness, decision-makers can improve the well-being of adopted children and reduce the social costs associated with conduct disorders.
