A study on the nutrition of children living with HIV in Senegal reveals gaps in the acceptability of nutritional recovery programs

Research conducted by Marie Varloteaux at the Institute for Research and Development highlighted that 68% of parents and 58% of children understand information about outpatient nutritional recovery in Senegal. This study, conducted in 2017, aims to improve the nutritional care of children living with HIV in the country.

Malnutrition severely affects children living with HIV in Senegal, exacerbated by the effects of antiretroviral treatments. Despite efforts to improve access to care, pediatric management remains insufficient. The Snac's study, involving 112 children and 30 healthcare professionals, was established to assess the effectiveness and acceptability of outpatient nutritional recovery programs.

The results show that 68% of parents understood the information about nutritional recovery, while 58% of children correctly answered questions about the information system. These figures reveal gaps in communication, particularly regarding the right to leave the study, which could hinder adherence to the programs.

The implications of this research are significant for policymakers and health stakeholders. It is recommended to improve nutritional recovery programs and strengthen communication with families to ensure better acceptability.
