Yémalin Agossou unveils high-performance laterite concrete reaching 27.52 MPa for sustainable construction in Benin

Research by Yémalin Agossou at the Institut de Chimie - CNRS shows that laterite concrete, reinforced with rattan and ronier palm fiber armatures, achieves a compressive strength of 27.52 MPa, comparable to conventional concrete. This innovation, backed by a joint Franco-African doctoral supervision, opens up prospects for sustainable construction in Benin.

Facing mounting environmental pressures, Yémalin Agossou's research focuses on the use of laterite and plant-based armatures to develop eco-responsible concrete. The construction sector, a leading consumer of energy and emitter of CO2, must shift toward sustainable alternatives to reduce its environmental footprint.

The study's findings show that laterite concrete, combined with ronier palm and rattan armatures, achieves a compressive strength of 27.52 MPa. Furthermore, bond strength between the concrete and the armatures was measured at 4 MPa, validating the use of these local, renewable materials for high-performance construction.

This research carries significant implications for the construction sector in West Africa. By incorporating local materials, it becomes possible to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings and support the local economy. Laterite concrete floor slabs can span up to 3.50 meters, offering viable solutions for housing.
