Celia Idres from IRDL unveils innovative biocomposites made from bacterial polyesters and Agave Americana fibers in Benin
Celia Idres, a researcher at the National Polytechnic Institute of Brittany, has developed biocomposites made from bacterial polyesters and Agave Americana fibers, increasing the Young's modulus by 78% with 30% fibers. This research, supported by IRDL, aims to provide sustainable alternatives to plastic materials in Benin and West Africa.
In a context of increasing plastic pollution, Celia Idres's research at IRDL focuses on the development of biocomposites from bacterial polyesters and Agave Americana fibers. This plant, abundant in West Africa, could provide a sustainable solution to environmental challenges by replacing harmful synthetic materials.
The research results show significant improvements in the mechanical properties of the biocomposites. By varying the loading rate of Agave Americana fibers, the Young's modulus increased by 78% with 30% fibers, while the PHBHHx-AAF-B biocomposite saw its Young's modulus and bending modulus increase by 170% and 44%, respectively.
These advances open up prospects for decision-makers and stakeholders in the sustainable materials market. Biocomposites could replace polluting plastics, offering ecological solutions. It is recommended to support research and develop strategic partnerships to capitalize on this market potential.
