Urgency of breast cancer screening in Benin: 70% of cases detected at an advanced stage

Karmen Pofagi, a researcher at the Institute for Research and Development, revealed that 70% of breast cancer cases in Cotonou, Benin, are detected at an advanced stage, compared to an 88% 5-year survival rate in France. This study, supported by the EpiMaCT laboratory, highlights the need to improve early screening programs to save lives.

Karmen Pofagi's research highlights the paradox of obesity and its impact on breast cancer survival, a major public health issue in Benin. In Cotonou, 70% of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, revealing gaps in the healthcare system. In comparison, France shows a net 5-year survival rate of 88%, underscoring the urgency for reform.

The comparative study between Cotonou and Limoges highlighted that the weight status of patients influences their survival in complex ways. Although obesity is often a risk factor, some obese women may benefit from a better response to treatments. These results emphasize the importance of a nuanced approach in managing breast cancer.

The findings of this research call for an improvement in early screening programs in Benin. Decision-makers must invest in awareness and screening strategies to reduce the number of late diagnoses. By acting quickly, it is possible to improve survival rates and decrease costs associated with advanced stage care.

« « In Cotonou, 70% of breast cancer cases are detected at an advanced stage, which underscores the urgency of improving early screening, » says Karmen Pofagi. »

« « This research sheds light on crucial data for decision-makers, highlighting the importance of increased access to knowledge to improve public health in Benin, » states the Lektaris team. »
