A Community Approach to Pediatric Tuberculosis Screening in Benin

Research conducted by Anca Vasiliu at the Institute for Research and Development has developed a simplified screening tool for pediatric tuberculosis, achieving a negative predictive value of 98.7% for children under 5 years old. This innovation aims to improve the care of children in contact with tuberculosis patients in Benin, addressing a major public health issue.

Pediatric tuberculosis represents a public health challenge, particularly in high-prevalence countries like Benin. Anca Vasiliu, in collaboration with IRD and INSERM, has identified that 15 to 20% of tuberculosis cases involve children. The lack of adequate screening leads to serious consequences for child health, highlighting the need for targeted interventions.

The study established a randomized controlled trial and demonstrated that a simplified screening tool achieved a negative predictive value of 98.7% for children under 5 years old. This method, incorporating simple questionnaires and rapid tests, could be implemented by community health workers, thus facilitating early diagnosis.

The results of this research provide concrete recommendations for policymakers, including the integration of appropriate screening methods into health services. By developing community interventions, it is possible to reduce long-term treatment costs and improve the health of vulnerable children in Benin.
