A study on the genetic diversity of Cryptococcus reveals major challenges for the fight against cryptococcosis in West Africa

Research conducted by Kondo Kassi at the Institute for Research and Development highlighted a significant genetic diversity of Cryptococcus isolates in Abidjan, with approximately 600,000 annual deaths due to cryptococcosis in Africa. This study, validated by ABES/STAR, emphasizes the importance of antifungal resistance in the management of opportunistic infections.

Neuromeningeal cryptococcosis, caused by Cryptococcus neoformans, is a major opportunistic infection, particularly in HIV-positive patients. In Africa, it is the fourth leading cause of death related to infectious diseases, with 600,000 deaths per year. This research, conducted in Abidjan, focuses on the genetic diversity of Cryptococcus isolates and their resistance to antifungals, a crucial public health issue.

The study collected Cryptococcus isolates from 1,750 HIV-positive patients and 667 environmental samples. The results show a great genotypic diversity, with clinical and environmental isolates exhibiting distinct characteristics. The presence of multiple species of Cryptococcus in a single sample was observed, a first in West Africa, revealing challenges for treatment.

The results of this research have strategic implications for the development of tailored antifungal treatments. Companies investing in research on the genetic diversity of Cryptococcus strains can address an urgent need in the growing antifungal market in West Africa, while considering the risks of resistance.
