Optimizing Waste Management in Sèmè-Kpodji: A Study by Virgile Narcisse Sènan Ayimade

Virgile Narcisse Sènan Ayimade, of the University of South Brittany, has identified at-risk zones in Sèmè-Kpodji, Benin, using Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing. This research, validated by the ABES/STAR network, highlights the urgent need to improve waste management to protect public health and the environment.

Waste management in Sèmè-Kpodji poses major challenges for public health and the environment, compounded by rapid population growth. The proliferation of illegal dumpsites, containing plastics and electronic waste, is creating serious environmental risks, such as soil and groundwater pollution.

The study used Geographic Information Systems and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to identify and prioritize the most vulnerable areas. The results highlight the urgent need to optimize the waste management system, making it possible to propose solutions tailored to local needs.

Recommendations include initiatives to improve waste management, offering decision-makers an opportunity to invest in sustainable infrastructure. Swift action is needed to prevent further deterioration of the situation, while addressing public health concerns.
