Significant Advances on Fungal Infections in Cameroon by University Montpellier 1

The research of Thierry Ngouana Kammalac at University Montpellier 1 reveals 25 strains of C. neoformans and 317 isolates of Candida, including 113 C. albicans, in people living with HIV in Yaoundé. This study, supported by a Franco-African co-supervision, sheds light on the genetic diversity of fungal pathogens in a region where data is scarce.

The thesis of Thierry Ngouana Kammalac, conducted at University Montpellier 1 and University of Yaoundé I, highlights the genetic diversity of Cryptococcus and Candida isolates in people living with HIV. Opportunistic fungal infections pose a major public health challenge in Cameroon, where the lack of data complicates the implementation of prevention and treatment strategies.

The study identified 14 molecular types for C. neoformans and 65 for C. albicans, thus demonstrating significant genetic diversity. These results underscore the urgency for in-depth research on molecular epidemiology and antifungal susceptibility, in order to improve the management of immunocompromised patients in the region.

The results of this research pave the way for alternative antifungal treatments based on plant extracts, responding to a growing demand in the market. Decision-makers must act quickly to support the development of these solutions, collaborating with academic institutions to overcome regulatory and clinical challenges.
