Gabrielle Derippe unveils an innovative marine solution against plastic pollution using PHAs

Gabrielle Derippe, from the National Polytechnic Institute of Brittany, has demonstrated the ability of the bacterial strain A. plasticoclasticus MED1 to produce polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a biodegradable alternative to conventional plastics. This research, supported by the IRDL laboratory, opens new avenues for combating plastic pollution in marine environments.

Plastic pollution represents a major environmental challenge, with over 390 million tons of plastics produced each year, severely impacting marine ecosystems. Gabrielle Derippe, within the IRDL, has explored the production of PHAs by marine bacteria, highlighting the potential of these biodegradable biopolymers to reduce plastic waste in the environment.

The research has highlighted the ability of the strain A. plasticoclasticus MED1 to produce PHAs, such as polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and polyhydroxyhexanoate (PHN). These results pave the way for concrete applications in the fight against plastic pollution, demonstrating the metabolic pathways involved in the production and biodegradation of PHAs.

The implications of this research are significant for decision-makers and stakeholders in the bioplastics market. Investing in the production of PHAs could meet a growing demand for sustainable alternatives to plastics, while complying with new environmental regulations. Recommendations to support this transition towards more sustainable solutions are also proposed.

« « The strain A. plasticoclasticus MED1 has demonstrated its ability to produce PHAs, thus offering a promising alternative to combat marine plastic pollution, » says Gabrielle Derippe. »

« « This research highlights the importance of accessing sustainable solutions in the face of the plastic pollution crisis, a crucial issue for decision-makers, » emphasizes the Lektaris team. »
