Improving HIV Care in Senegal: 41% of Patients Initiated Antiretroviral Treatment

A study conducted by Ndeye Fatou Ngom at the Institute for Research and Development reveals that only 41% of patients eligible for antiretroviral treatment (ART) in Senegal have actually started their treatment. This research, validated in 2018, highlights the ongoing challenges of continuity of care in the country.

The fight against HIV in Senegal represents a major public health issue, affecting various aspects of society. Despite advances in access to antiretroviral treatments, continuity of care and virological monitoring remain crucial challenges. The study by Ndeye Fatou Ngom, conducted over two decades at an Outpatient Treatment Center in Dakar, underscores the importance of improving access to care for patients living with HIV.

The results of this research show that 69% of patients were eligible for ART, but only 41% initiated treatment. Retention rates at 12, 24, and 36 months are 84%, 77%, and 73%, respectively. Additionally, 64% of patients achieved virological success at 50 copies/ml, revealing disparities in access and follow-up care, particularly among men and residents outside of Dakar.

For policymakers, these results highlight the need to improve access and continuity of care for patients living with HIV in Senegal. Recommendations include developing innovative solutions to overcome barriers to treatment access and strengthening public health programs. This represents a strategic opportunity for the health sector, supported by international commitments.
