Oumaima Salhi unlocks the scientific barrier on the risks of microplastics for marine health in Benin

Oumaima Salhi, from the National Polytechnic Institute of Brittany, revealed that microplastics act as vectors for metallic nanoparticles, increasing their toxicity on marine organisms. This discovery, stemming from her thesis defended in 2025, underscores the urgency to act against marine pollution in Benin and its implications for human health.

Marine pollution, particularly from plastics, is a growing issue that threatens biodiversity and human health. Microplastics, particles smaller than 5 mm, are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems. Oumaima Salhi, within the IRDL, studied the interactions between these microplastics and metallic nanoparticles, particularly cadmium, to assess their impact on bivalves and phytoplankton.

Salhi highlighted complex interaction mechanisms, demonstrating that microplastics can intensify the toxicity of metallic nanoparticles. Although precise figures are not available, this research underscores the importance of a thorough understanding of the risks associated with plastic pollution for marine organisms and, by extension, for human food chains.

The results of this thesis open up perspectives for investments in depollution technologies and alternatives to plastics. Decision-makers must consider the urgency of acting against this growing environmental threat by supporting initiatives that address the challenges of marine pollution and fostering partnerships with research institutions.
