Optimizing earthen granaries in Benin: a sustainable solution for cereal storage

Clément Labintan, of the Université de Lorraine, has developed a method for optimizing earthen granaries in Benin, increasing their storage capacity without altering their structure. This research, supported by the Université d'Abomey-Calavi, offers a response to food insecurity challenges in rural areas by improving cereal storage conditions.

Cereal storage in northern Benin relies on earthen granaries, which are often limited in capacity. Attempts to introduce modern storage facilities have failed, as local populations prefer their traditional methods. Clément Labintan's thesis focuses on optimizing Yom-type granaries, seeking to increase their volume while preserving their architectural form and traditional material.

The research involved an experimental characterization of banco earthen material, making it possible to determine the optimal dosage of straw and néré decoction to improve mechanical properties. Simulations revealed that these adjustments allow for the design of larger granaries while maintaining structural integrity, thereby promoting optimal storage conditions for cereals.

The findings of this research pave the way for building community granaries that could serve as silos for village cooperatives. This could help ease food insecurity in rural areas of Benin by reducing harvest losses and improving the quality of stored cereals, a matter essential to decision-makers and investors.
