Optimization of Epidemiological Simulations: The GRADEA Protocol Improves the Reliability of Health Forecasts in Benin

Nhan Ho, a researcher at Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis, has developed the GRADEA protocol to optimize epidemiological simulations, thereby enhancing the reliability of health forecasts. This research, validated by ABES/STAR, was conducted as part of a Franco-African co-supervision and could transform health policy planning in Benin.

The study of complex systems, such as ecosystems and urban dynamics, relies on simulators that allow for anticipating the evolution of systems. In the field of epidemiology, these tools are crucial for predicting the spread of diseases and assessing the impact of health interventions. However, validating simulation results is essential to ensure their reliability, which led to the development of the GRADEA protocol.

The GRADEA protocol combines three exploration algorithms: screening search, global search, and local search, thus optimizing the exploration of parameter spaces of complex simulators. This synergistic approach allows for rapidly reducing the search space, increasing confidence in the results of epidemiological simulations, although precise figures on effectiveness are not available.

The optimization of simulations by GRADEA offers significant potential to improve health policy planning. Decision-makers must closely collaborate with health institutions to facilitate the adoption of these technologies, while supporting research and developing strategic partnerships to maximize the impact of the proposed solutions.
