A study reveals that 5.2% of children in Comé suffer from respiratory wheezing related to parasitic infections

This 2024 study highlights the link between geohelminths and indoor air pollution, emphasizing the urgency of targeted interventions to improve child health in the region.

Child health in Benin is compromised by parasitic infections and indoor air pollution, often perceived separately. Euripide Frinel Avokpaho's thesis focuses on the municipality of Comé, where 98.6% of households use solid fuels for cooking, worsening precarious living conditions and increasing the risk of respiratory diseases.

The study revealed a significant correlation between infection by geohelminths and increased respiratory wheezing, with 5.2% of children affected. Previous research indicates that children infected with these parasites are often hospitalized for respiratory issues, highlighting the importance of an integrated public health approach.

The findings of this research offer strategic recommendations for policymakers, including targeted interventions on indoor air pollution and parasitic infections. Improving children's living conditions could reduce long-term healthcare costs while raising awareness in local communities about the benefits of these actions.
