Optimization of Pest Monitoring Networks: A Breakthrough for Agriculture in Vietnam

Viet Truong Xuan, a researcher at Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis, has identified three major restrictions in the rice pest monitoring networks in Vietnam, allowing for better management of brown planthopper invasions. This research, supported by IRD, was validated in 2014 and offers concrete solutions for farmers facing yield losses of up to 50%.

The fight against pests, particularly brown planthoppers, is crucial for agriculture in the Mekong Delta. Farmers face ecological and economic challenges, requiring effective tools to anticipate invasions. Viet Truong Xuan's research proposes an optimization of environmental monitoring networks, addressing the urgency of proactive management of threats to crops.

By integrating spatio-temporal analyses and data collected daily, this study identified three restrictions in the current monitoring network, limiting its effectiveness. Through simulation optimization techniques, forecasts regarding BPH invasions have been improved, enabling decision-makers to act quickly and effectively.
