Thibaut Gellé unlocks data on Alcohol Use Disorder in Africa with his thesis at IRD

For the first time, prevalence data on Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) has been collected in Benin and Togo by Thibaut Gellé, a researcher at the Institute for Research and Development. This advancement, validated by ABES/STAR, allows for a better understanding of the cultural and social dynamics surrounding alcohol in these countries, paving the way for tailored public health policies.

Thibaut Gellé's thesis, conducted at the Institute for Research and Development, addresses Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) in sub-Saharan Africa, a topic often overlooked. Epidemiological data on this disorder is scarce, making it difficult to implement effective public health policies. Gellé proposes a transcultural bio-psycho-social approach to better understand this phenomenon in a context where social norms influence alcohol-related behaviors.

Gellé conducted an in-depth study, revealing that only 16 studies had previously been conducted on AUD in sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the lack of available data. The results of his research provide socio-demographic and clinical characteristics specific to the populations of Benin and Togo, thus allowing for better targeting of public health interventions.

The implications of this research are significant for policymakers and public health stakeholders. By investing in programs targeting AUD, it is possible to improve the health of populations and reduce costs related to morbidity. It is crucial to establish strong partnerships with local stakeholders to ensure the success of these initiatives.

« « For the first time, we have collected prevalence data on AUD in Benin and Togo, revealing characteristics specific to these populations, » says Thibaut Gellé. »

« « This research opens new perspectives for policymakers in public health in West Africa, providing essential evidence-based data to guide policies, » emphasizes the Lektaris team. »
