Laure Civier from IRDL validates polyamide anchoring lines for offshore wind turbines

Laure Civier, from the National Polytechnic Institute of Brittany, has overcome a major scientific barrier regarding polyamide anchoring lines for offshore wind turbines, a crucial advancement in the European goal of 160 GW by 2030. Her thesis, defended in 2023, proposes predictive models to ensure the durability of these materials in marine environments.

Laure Civier's thesis addresses the durability of polyamide anchoring lines for offshore wind turbines, a key issue in the current energy transition. While Europe has a wind capacity of 28 GW, research on anchoring materials is becoming essential to achieve the ambitious goals of 160 GW by 2030, requiring technical innovations.

Civier conducted experimental studies on the viscoelastic and viscoplastic properties of polyamide ropes, revealing equivalent strength to that of polyester and superior elongation at break. This work has led to the development of predictive models to assess the behavior of these anchoring lines against environmental forces, thus ensuring their effectiveness.

The results of this research provide strategic recommendations for the renewable energy sector, particularly regarding the reduction of installation costs and the improvement of project durability. Decision-makers should consider partnerships with research institutions to validate these models and support applied research projects.

« « My research shows that polyamide anchoring lines can offer equivalent strength to that of polyester while exhibiting superior elongation at break, which is promising for the future of offshore wind turbines. » »

« « Laure Civier's study paves the way for a better understanding of the materials used in renewable energies, a crucial issue for decision-makers looking to invest in sustainable solutions. » »
