Thomas Fruleux develops hydromorphic biocomposites for marine restoration in Benin

Thomas Fruleux, from the National Polytechnic Institute of Brittany, presented in 2023 innovative hydromorphic biocomposites, created through 4D printing, for marine restoration in Benin. This research addresses the need for sustainable solutions in the face of marine ecosystem degradation, allowing materials to adapt to environmental variations.

Thomas Fruleux's research at IRDL focuses on hydromorphic biocomposites, a response to the threat to marine biodiversity posed by human activities. Artificial reefs, often made of concrete or plastic, raise environmental concerns. The innovation lies in 4D printing, allowing for the design of materials that can adapt to marine conditions, thus providing a sustainable alternative.

The developed hydromorphic biocomposites can change shape based on environmental stimuli, such as humidity or temperature. For example, they can expand or contract according to water temperature, enhancing their strength and mechanical properties. This adaptability paves the way for various applications in marine restoration.

The implications of this research are strategic for decision-makers and investors, with a growing market for sustainable materials. Hydromorphic biocomposites present an interesting return on investment potential but require institutional support and pilot projects to demonstrate their effectiveness and encourage their adoption.

« « The hydromorphic biocomposites I have developed can adapt to variations in temperature and humidity, thus providing a sustainable solution for marine restoration, » says Thomas Fruleux. »

« « Innovation in hydromorphic biocomposites opens new perspectives for the understanding and protection of marine ecosystems, which are essential for decision-makers, » emphasizes the Lektaris team. »
