Clay-Straw Composites for Sustainable Construction in Benin

The doctoral thesis of Christian Enagnon Adadja, conducted at the University of Lorraine and the University of Abomey-Calavi, reveals that incorporating up to 25% rice straw into a clay composite significantly improves its mechanical properties, offering a sustainable alternative for construction in Benin. This research, supported by a Franco-African joint supervision arrangement, was defended in 2020.

The study demonstrated that straw proportion influences the composite's mechanical properties. Up to a 25% straw content, tensile and compressive strength improve. Beyond this fraction, the Young's modulus decreases, indicating the need to optimize the formulation to maximize performance. Analytical models were used to predict the composite's elastic behavior, reinforcing the validity of the results.
