COVID-19: Impact on the Care of People Living with HIV in Benin

The thesis of Jihane Ben Farhat, defended at the University of Bordeaux, reveals an improvement in access to HIV treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to innovative initiatives in Benin. This research, validated by ABES/STAR, highlights the challenges faced by people living with HIV and the responses implemented to maintain continuity of care.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the vulnerabilities of health systems, particularly affecting people living with HIV. Jihane Ben Farhat's thesis analyzes the challenges faced by these patients, including the consequences of public health measures on access to treatments. Inequalities in access to care have intensified, highlighting the need for a response tailored to the needs of PLHIV.

The study shows that local initiatives, such as those implemented by NGOs in Benin, have improved access to HIV treatment, even during lockdown periods. These efforts have contributed to maintaining continuity of care despite obstacles. However, disparities persist, with some regions benefiting from improvements while others, such as certain areas of Nigeria, have suffered service interruptions.

The results of this research underscore the importance of strengthening health systems to better meet the needs of people living with HIV. Policymakers must draw on the lessons learned from the pandemic to develop sustainable strategies. Collaboration between governments and NGOs is essential to ensure equitable access to care and improve the management of PLHIV.
