A study reveals a moderate prevalence of kidney diseases among PLHIV in West Africa

Research conducted by Nongodo Firmin Kabore at the Institute for Research and Development highlighted that the prevalence of chronic kidney diseases among people living with HIV in West Africa is low to moderate, contrary to trends observed elsewhere. This study, validated by ABES/STAR, emphasizes the importance of targeted screening programs for this vulnerable population.

Sub-Saharan Africa faces a public health challenge with nearly 500 million people suffering from chronic kidney diseases, a significant proportion of whom are people living with HIV. These kidney diseases exacerbate the progression of HIV, creating a vicious cycle. Variants of the APOL1 gene, more common in this region, increase the risk of kidney diseases, making the situation even more concerning.

Kabore's study revealed that the frequency of risk variants of the APOL1 gene among PLHIV in West Africa is 3 to 5%. Unlike other regions, the prevalences of kidney diseases in this population are low to moderate, challenging assumptions about renal risks in this area. These results pave the way for a better understanding of local risk factors.

The findings of this research imply the need to develop screening and prevention programs for kidney diseases for PLHIV. Policymakers must invest in early interventions to reduce long-term treatment costs. A partnership with research institutions and local governments is crucial to maximize the impact of these initiatives.
