A study by IRD reveals strong acceptance of ART treatment among MSM in Benin but highlights persistent challenges

A study conducted by ter Tiero Elias Dah at the Institute for Research and Development reveals that 95% of HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) accept to initiate antiretroviral treatment (ART) immediately. However, the incidence of HIV remains high, indicating gaps in screening and treatment strategies in Benin.

The HIV epidemic in West Africa, particularly among MSM, requires targeted interventions. Despite good acceptance of ART treatments, retention in care remains low due to stigma and discrimination. These factors hinder access to care for this high-risk population, highlighting the need for a reassessment of screening and treatment strategies.

The study, conducted as part of the CohMSM ANRS 12324-Expertise France project, shows that adherence to screening is satisfactory among HIV-negative MSM. However, despite a 95% acceptance rate for initiating ART, the incidence of HIV remains concerning. This paradox highlights the ineffectiveness of current strategies in the face of persistent stigma.

The results of this research suggest to policymakers to improve screening and treatment strategies for MSM by integrating awareness programs to reduce stigma. A proactive approach, including local partnerships, could maximize the impact of health initiatives and improve access to care for this vulnerable population.
