Improvement of Pediatric Tuberculosis Diagnosis in Benin — a Significant Advancement for Children

Research conducted by Patrick Orikiriza at the Institute for Research and Development has achieved a sensitivity of 90.9% in the diagnosis of pediatric tuberculosis using non-respiratory samples. This advancement, validated in 2019, addresses an urgent need in West Africa, where traditional methods are often unsuitable for young patients.

The diagnosis of pediatric tuberculosis is a major challenge in West Africa, where health systems are fragile. Traditional methods, such as sputum analysis, are often unsuitable for children, leading to risky empirical treatments. Patrick Orikiriza's research explored the use of non-respiratory samples, such as stool and urine, to improve diagnosis and reduce trauma in young patients.

The study results are significant: 4.3% of tested children were confirmed positive for tuberculosis, with a sensitivity of 90.9% for the XpertMTB/RIF test on sputum. Furthermore, the observed mortality rate among children within three months of diagnosis was 6.9%. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the innovative approach proposed by Orikiriza.

This research opens strategic perspectives for public health decision-makers. Early diagnosis of pediatric tuberculosis could reduce costs associated with empirical treatments and hospitalizations. It is recommended to develop training programs for healthcare professionals and establish local partnerships to facilitate the implementation of these new methods.
