André Calazans Menescal de Souza breaks new ground on metal dissipation under cyclic loading at IRDL

André Calazans Menescal de Souza, of the Institut National Polytechnique de Bretagne, has developed an innovative model linking self-heating measurements to the fatigue properties of metals, using the FFT method. This research, supported by the ABES/STAR network, paves the way for improved testing methods for more reliable and durable materials, with significant implications for industry in Benin.

This research focuses on analyzing metal dissipation under cyclic loading, an essential experimental method for assessing fatigue properties. Using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method, the study examines polycrystalline aggregates, shedding light on the heterogeneous onset of microplasticity, which is crucial to understanding dissipation mechanisms.

The findings show that uniaxial cyclic loading reveals localized microplasticity phenomena, with a fatigue indicator parameter (FIP) based on cumulative slip. This approach made it possible to establish a link between slip band activation and self-heating measurements, validated against experimental data from the literature.

The implications of this research are significant for industry, as it proposes more reliable and durable testing methods for materials. Decision-makers should consider these innovations to improve material performance, reduce costs linked to failures, and meet growing market demand for sustainable solutions.
