An Innovative Methodology for Biomass Gasification in Rural Areas of Benin

Grâce Chidikofan, from the University of Bordeaux, has developed a methodology for evaluating biomass gasification electricity production systems, aimed at improving rural electrification in Benin. This research, supported by the I2M-BX laboratory, proposes sustainable solutions to meet the growing energy needs of rural areas.

Research on biomass gasification is crucial for West Africa, where access to electricity remains limited. Grâce Chidikofan has developed an innovative methodological framework that evaluates the performance and sustainability of biomass gasification electricity production systems, a major issue for rural electrification and the socio-economic development of communities.

This thesis defines fourteen evaluation criteria, taking into account technical, economic, environmental, and social dimensions. By integrating these criteria, it is possible to identify optimal configurations to valorize local biomass, considering available resources and the energy needs of communities, thus facilitating the design of tailored systems.

The results of this research pave the way for investments in rural electrification projects. Policymakers must consider the growth potential of the biomass gasification market and engage in awareness initiatives to strengthen local communities' trust in these sustainable technologies.
