Adama Traore proposes sustainable management of water resources of the Senegal River to improve living conditions

Adama Traore, a researcher at the University of Burgundy Europe, presented his thesis on the sustainable management of water resources of the Senegal River, revealing gaps in the implementation of OMVS agreements. This research, validated by the ABES/STAR network, highlights the importance of a collaborative approach to involve riparian communities in decisions that affect them.

The management of water resources of the Senegal River is a crucial issue for the riparian countries, notably Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, and Guinea. Despite the efforts of OMVS, conflicts of interest and insufficient protection of the ecosystem persist, hindering a coordinated and effective management of water resources.

The analysis of OMVS conventions and domestic rights has highlighted gaps in the implementation of agreements, with monitoring mechanisms often absent. Field surveys and interviews show that riparian communities feel excluded from decisions, complicating the sustainable management of resources.

For policymakers, this research underscores the opportunity to invest in sustainable infrastructure and participatory management systems. A collaborative approach that integrates local knowledge is essential to improve access to drinking water and preserve the aquatic ecosystem, while maximizing return on investment.
