Machhour El Assaad demonstrates the performance of bio-based materials for sustainable construction in Benin

The thesis of Machhour El Assaad, defended at the National Polytechnic Institute of Brittany in 2024, reveals that bio-based materials such as straw and hemp can compete with conventional materials in terms of energy performance, a crucial issue for sustainable construction in Benin. This research unlocks the variability of thermal conductivity influenced by local climatic conditions.

The research of Machhour El Assaad, within the IRDL, addresses the issue of the performance of bio-based materials in construction. In a context where construction significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, it is essential to evaluate these materials, often perceived as ecological, for their energy efficiency. Variations in humidity and temperature, particularly in Benin, make this study particularly relevant.

Preliminary results show that materials such as straw, hemp, and sheep wool can compete with traditional materials in terms of thermal conductivity. This study highlights the importance of adapting the use of these materials to specific environmental conditions, which could transform their integration into sustainable construction projects.

The implications of this research are significant for decision-makers and investors. The growing adoption of bio-based materials could improve the energy efficiency of buildings, leading to substantial energy savings. It is recommended to evaluate projects based on reliable databases and to monitor regulatory developments to maximize their viability.
