Gaston Berger University's MenAfriSIM™ Model Improves Modeling of Meningitis Epidemics in Senegal

The doctoral thesis of Papa Massar Niane, validated by Gaston Berger University, presents the MenAfriSIM™ model, which accounts for 53% of the variability in meningitis cases in Senegal. By incorporating environmental data, this model offers an innovative approach to anticipating epidemics in a critical public health context.

Bacterial meningitis represents a major public health challenge in Senegal, compounded by environmental and climatic factors. Papa Massar Niane's research, conducted at the UMMISCO laboratory, aims to resolve the key bottleneck in understanding epidemics by developing the MenAfriSIM™ model, which analyzes disease transmission from complex data.

The MenAfriSIM™ model uses the Coefficient of Meningitis Invasion and Development for Environmental eXposure (COMIDEX) to assess the impact of environmental conditions. The results show that nearly a third of the variability in meningitis cases is attributable to temperature and dust, underscoring the importance of these factors in the spread of the disease.

The implications of this research are significant for decision-makers. By integrating data from the MenAfriSIM™ model, health authorities can improve epidemic surveillance and prevention, targeting the most vulnerable areas and adapting public health policies accordingly.
