Optimization of Urban Mobility in Marrakech: An Innovative Multi-Agent Model

Saâd Touhbi from Gaston Berger University of Saint-Louis has developed a multi-agent model to optimize urban mobility in Marrakech, where the population has reached nearly one million inhabitants. This research, validated in 2018, aims to address the issues of congestion and pollution related to the rapid growth of the city.

Urban mobility represents a major challenge for Marrakech, with a rapidly increasing population and often saturated infrastructure. Traffic jams and pollution harm the quality of life of citizens and the local economy. Saâd Touhbi's thesis, co-supervised between UGB and IRD, proposes an innovative model to simulate driving behaviors and anticipate traffic flows.

The research methodology includes four steps, including processing vehicle arrival data and calculating the time interval between vehicles (TIV). This approach allows for analyzing interactions on the roads, particularly during peak hours, to better understand and model urban traffic in Marrakech.

The results of this research open up prospects for improving urban management in Marrakech and beyond. Decision-makers can leverage these simulation tools to reduce costs related to congestion and pollution while enhancing the quality of life for citizens and the economic efficiency of the city.

« « My multi-agent model allows simulating driving behaviors and anticipating vehicle flows, thus providing a solution to the challenges of urban mobility in Marrakech, » says Saâd Touhbi. »

« « This research illustrates the importance of access to knowledge for decision-makers, providing them with concrete tools to improve urban mobility, » emphasizes the Lektaris team. »
