Amevor Komlan Agbemadon unveils the stakes of port development in Lomé

Amevor Komlan Agbemadon, from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, presented a thesis in 2024 on port development in Lomé, revealing that the volume of containers handled has exploded, rising from a few hundred thousand to several million per year. This dynamic poses major challenges for urbanization and city planning.

The autonomous port of Lomé, modernized since the 2000s, has become a key player in maritime trade in West Africa. However, this rapid growth in maritime traffic, coupled with rampant urbanization, is putting pressure on infrastructure and urban services, requiring strategic planning to avoid congestion and improve the quality of life for residents.

Amevor Komlan Agbemadon's thesis emphasizes the importance of effective management of port infrastructure to respond to the increase in traffic. Although precise figures are not available, the analysis of the relationships between the port and the city highlights the need to adapt access roads and improve logistics to reduce transportation costs.

The results of this research provide concrete recommendations for decision-makers, particularly regarding investment in infrastructure and sustainability. The investment opportunities in urban development and infrastructure are considerable but require a proactive approach to integrate sustainable solutions and minimize environmental impacts.
