Alarming seroprevalence of 65.5% of SARS-CoV-2 among adolescents in Togo, according to a thesis from the University of Bordeaux

The thesis by Arnold Sadio Tiokang, defended at the University of Bordeaux, reveals an alarming seroprevalence of 65.5% of SARS-CoV-2 among over 7000 adolescents in Togo, highlighting a triple burden of morbidity. This study, validated by the ABES/STAR network, calls for urgent attention to the health of young people, especially those living on the streets.

The health of adolescents in Togo is often neglected, despite their status as a dominant population. Arnold Sadio Tiokang's research highlights a triple burden of morbidity, including SARS-CoV-2, HIV, and viral hepatitis. Adolescents, particularly those living on the streets, are especially vulnerable and require targeted interventions to improve their well-being.

The study's results show an alarming seroprevalence of 65.5% for SARS-CoV-2, as well as prevalences of 3.7% for hepatitis B and 4.7% for hepatitis C. These figures underscore the urgency of acting to protect the health of adolescents, the majority of whom are potentially infected with viruses that have serious consequences.

The implications of this research are significant for policymakers. It is crucial to invest in the health of adolescents, especially those living on the streets, to reduce long-term costs associated with untreated diseases. Partnerships with local stakeholders and targeted interventions can improve the health situation of this vulnerable population.

« « The seroprevalence of 65.5% of SARS-CoV-2 among adolescents in Togo reveals a health crisis that requires immediate action, » says Arnold Sadio Tiokang. »

« « This research highlights the importance of accessing accurate data to inform health policy decisions in West Africa, » emphasizes the Lektaris team. »
