Eyram Tchibozo unlocks the barriers of cardiovascular risk factors in pregnant women in Benin

Eyram Tchibozo's thesis, defended in 2024 at the Institute for Research and Development, reveals that 22% of maternal deaths in Benin are due to pre-eclampsia. This research identifies cardiovascular risk factors in pregnant women, highlighting the urgency of improving maternal healthcare in a country where the maternal mortality rate reaches 405 per 100,000 live births.

The health of pregnant women in Benin is a major public health issue, with an alarming maternal mortality rate of 405 per 100,000 live births in 2015. Eyram Tchibozo's thesis, conducted at the Institute for Research and Development, highlights the cardiovascular risk factors affecting this vulnerable population, particularly pre-eclampsia, which is responsible for 22% of maternal deaths.

The study was conducted in 30 maternity wards, where data was collected on cardiovascular risk factors and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The results show significant disparities in access to care between urban and rural areas, underscoring the need for targeted action to improve maternal health and reduce pregnancy-related complications.

The implications of this research are strategic for policymakers. Investing in targeted maternal healthcare can reduce the maternal mortality rate and improve economic productivity. It is crucial to engage local communities and collaborate with health stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions that address the specific needs of pregnant women in Benin.
