80% of SMEs fail before five years in Côte d'Ivoire, according to a thesis from the University of Lille

A study conducted by Ollibo Arnaud Gouekou at the CLERSÉ laboratory of the University of Lille reveals that 80% of SMEs and micro-enterprises in Côte d'Ivoire go bankrupt before reaching their five years. This research highlights the challenges related to acquiring cultural capital, essential for the sustainability of small businesses in a complex economic environment.

The Ivorian economy, rich and dynamic, relies on a large number of small entrepreneurs. However, they face major challenges, with 80% of them failing before five years. This finding raises questions about access to cultural capital, which includes skills and social networks, and is crucial for the survival of these businesses, often coming from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The research revealed that the low level of education among small entrepreneurs limits their access to resources and business networks. For example, a young graduate from a local university is more likely to connect with investors than those who have not pursued higher education. This lack of access constitutes a scientific barrier that this thesis seeks to overcome.

To improve the sustainability of SMEs/micro-enterprises, it is recommended to invest in initiatives that strengthen cultural capital and access to education. Partnerships with local organizations and educational institutions can serve as effective levers to support these entrepreneurs, thereby maximizing their chances of success in a high-potential market.
