Modeling the Transmission of Hepatitis B in Senegal: A Step Forward for Public Health

Abdoul Azziz Fall from the University of Paul Verlaine - Metz has developed models of hepatitis B transmission in Senegal, incorporating vertical transmission, a factor often overlooked. This research, supported by Inria, aims to improve public health policies to reduce the incidence of hepatitis B in newborns.

Abdoul Azziz Fall's research focuses on the epidemiological modeling of hepatitis B in Senegal, where the prevalence of this infection remains concerning. By proposing two distinct models, one without vertical transmission and the other incorporating it, the study highlights crucial public health issues, particularly mother-to-child transmission.

The integration of vertical transmission in the models allows for a better understanding of the dynamics of hepatitis B spread. Although precise figures are not available, the study emphasizes that without intervention, the risk of transmission to the child is significant, necessitating particular attention in control strategies.

The results of this research imply that policymakers must adapt public health policies to target vertical transmission. Concrete recommendations include the development of screening and vaccination programs for pregnant women to reduce the incidence of hepatitis B in newborns.

« « This research offers valuable insights for policymakers, highlighting the importance of adapting public health policies to the reality of hepatitis B transmission. » »
